Tips for Moving to a New City

           Before you move:

Research the town: Google activities, and cool places to eat. Build some excitement about the new city and the possibilities! Use the city website to find businesses and connection services for your new house or apartment.

            How to learn the City:

Sunday Drives: Right after you move to a new town and the craziness of the move has somewhat resided you might find yourself with a little bit of extra time. I would also use that time to “wander” around the city. I’d get in my car and just head in a direction. I would be sure to pay attention to the streets and business that I would pass. Once my allotted drive time was half way up. I would then try and make my way back home without the GPS, driving in a new direction than the way I came. I often found this relaxing and would usually find a few cool places to stop in and check out, either immediately or in the future. (Don’t worry if you ever get lost you can always GPS your way home!)

Practice Your Commute: Sunday afternoon before your first day, or a weekday morning if you have the time, spend some time driving back and forth to your new work location to learn the route and ensure that you know the best way to get there and about how long it will take! Being punctual on your fist day will start your day off right.

How to find places to hang out:

Host Out of Town Guests/Friends: This is great if you are new to a city or have been in one for a while. Bringing an unfamiliar person to visit you in a new city is a great way to view the city in new and exciting ways! It gives you the chance to do those "cheesy tourist" activities, show off all the cool local spots that you like to hang out at, and challenge yourself to discover and find new ones. Plus having old faces in a new city can help you feel at home!

            How to meet people:

Volunteering: Go online to your favorite charity, or a popular one you’ve been wanting to support and look for opportunities to support your new community. These events are normally filled with great people that enjoy giving back. I have found that they often are existed to help a new comer to town find their way around. This also provides an easy way to “fill” your social schedule until you find or create that new groups of friends.

Community Rec Leagues/ Activities: If you're into being active then you will easily find folks to hang out with in a rec league. They already like what you like and have scheduled meet up times to engage. Lean in and you are sure to meet some like-minded fun people and activities.
